New Traffic Light Coming to Route 50 & Stanton Ave. Intersection Near Royal Farms

WICOMICOCOUNTY, Md. - The State Highway Administration says a new traffic signal will be coming to the intersection of Route 50 and Stanton Avenue this spring.

Neighbors say the crossing has had its fair share of accidents over the last few years because of the heavy traffic near the Royal Farms.  That's what prompted SHA to slow down traffic and make the median crossing safer.

"So that way during peak times of the day - when the traffic is the most and the risk is the highest - that signal will control the intersection," District Engineer Jay Meredith said.

Kristen Ennis lives right down the street on White Lowe Road.  She says the intersection gives her anxiety to drive through because of the number of crashes she's seen there over the years.

"There's a merge lane right there and a lot of people don't know that and they just kind of swing right out," Ennis said.

And while neighbor Kellie Kimes says she applauds the new light coming, she worries how it will affect the flow of traffic.

"The signal will obviously slow our traffic down which is a huge concern - everyone's trying to get to their destination yesterday," Kimes said.

Kevin Muldoon, from Berlin, also goes through that intersection every day.  Muldoon says while it may require extra time for his commute, he understands the purpose behind it.

"I'm sure it would slow down traffic, it'll probably slow me down going to work, but that's okay," Muldoon said.

SHA says work for the new signal should begin this spring and should finish up by this fall.
