Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md. - Pm Monday, the Salisbury University community said good bye to one of their own. After battling a rare form of blood cancer for about a year, former SU basketball player Jack Ferguson passed away.

In a Facebook post, Salisbury University said Ferguson succumbed to the disease on Sunday, March 10.

Ferguson was to be a senior on the men's basketball team during the 2018-19 season until a diagnosis of Histiocytic Sarcoma during the summer," the post said.

For SU Basketball Coach Brian McDermott, Ferguson's legacy will help push the Seagulls forward.

"Jack was the guy we all wanted to be, he set that kind of bar. You don't get that kind of legacy and that kind of person come through Salisbury university that often," he said.

In a statement to WBOC, fellow teammates said they're are grieving the loss of one of his brothers. They said they are proud of the way he fought and will miss him deeply.

"Jack was our brother, teammate, and friend who will be with us forever. We were proud of the way he fought and we will miss him deeply. We know he is in a better place now and is no longer suffering. He and his family will be in our thoughts, prayers, and hearts every day," read the statement.

Ferguson was being treated in his home country, Canada, since last summer. He was a former guard who helped the Sea Gulls to NCAA tournaments and received CAC All-Academic Team honors during the 2015-2016 season.
