DOVER, Del. --- Members of a state House committee on Wednesday cleared a proposed law threatening criminal charges against gun owners whose firearms end up in the hands of felons, children, or otherwise unauthorized users for a full floor vote.

House Bill 63 revises the crime of "unlawfully permitting a child access to a firearm" and renames it to "unsafe storage of a firearm." The modified statute would make it a misdemeanor to intentionally or recklessly store or leave a loaded firearm in a location where a minor, person prohibited by law, or “unauthorized person" is able to access the firearm does so.

The legislation says class of misdemeanor can be heightened if the firearm is used in an attempt to commit a crime, harms or causes serious injury to another person, or is transferred to another person.

The bill now heads to the House for a full vote. A similar bill passed there in the previous General Assembly.
