Final Phase of Boardwalk Barrier Project Underway

Posted: Updated:

OCEAN CITY, Md--Work has begun for the final phase of Ocean City's boardwalk barrier project.

It's all a part of OC's effort to increase pedestrian safety, by keeping vehicles off the boardwalk.

Workers spent the day on the ground, installing the permanent barriers known as bollards.

"What you see out of the ground, is a large pipe," says City Engineer, Terry McGean.

The bollards are meant to protect Ocean City's boardwalk, only allowing authorized cars on the boards, keeping unauthorized ones off.

"A couple years ago, there were a number of crime incidents in Europe and New York City, and this will prevent that from happening," says McGean.

Some visitors say the project won't prevent anything and say the 2.5 million dollar project a waste.

"I think they are nice, but I think it's a lot of money for something that probably won't happen," says Cathy Lauer.

But Ocean City officials say they rather err on the side of caution. Other visitors agree.

"I think it's a great idea to keep the boardwalk safe from cars coming on, it definitely makes me feel safer," says Sharon Lengton.

The project is expected to be complete by Memorial Day.
