MARDELA SPRINGS, Md.- The Wicomico County Board of Education has approved a final feasibility study for improvements at Mardela Middle and High School.

Paul Butler, director of communications for Wicomico County Public Schools, said the school suffers from systemic and instructional issues.

"There's no structural problems or anything like that. But the instructional needs and also just parts of the school with HVAC and heating and electrical, a lot of that needs to be re-done, and we don't just want to keep butting Band-Aids on it," said Butler.

A feasibility study was conducted to assess the needs of the school and laid out four different options for improvements.

Recently, the Board of Education approved the final feasibility study and agreed to move forward with option three, estimated to cost $71.8 million.

"Part of that is going to be tearing down part of the school and erecting a two-story," said Butler.

Butler said option three would also get rid of the portable classrooms out back and allow for more instructional space.

"Additional gym space, additional space for the arts programs," Butler said.

The final feasibility study has been submitted to the state for approval.

Butler said the hope is to begin construction in 2023. However, the project timeline is dependent on funding.
