Kindergarten Registration Starts Tuesday at Seaford

Posted: Updated:

SEAFORD, Del. - The Seaford School District is gearing up for a busy day Tuesday as they start their kindergarten registration at West Seaford Elementary.

"We have three appointments every 15 minutes," says Shay Crowson, a reading specialist at the school.

Registration will take place from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday.

"Parents should have contacted the school previously for an appointment but if they don't have one we can help them as well," she adds. "We're looking to register children that turn 5 before Sept. 1."

The registration process allows the district to prepare for the upcoming school year and properly serve all students.

"It gives the school the idea of what we're looking for in the fall. As far as staffing number of students in the classroom. So the more than we know ahead of time, the better we can serve the needs of our students," says Crowson.

The registration is also open for the dual language immersion program offered in the school. The district says the spots are limited, so expressing interest early on can help with the process.

"There are only 50 seats in the program and so we always recommend when parents come and register their students they ask for the interest form, this way we can include them in the lottery," says Kelly Hageman, supervisor of instruction.

Experts say kindergarten education is key for children.

"You're getting kids excited about learning, all the patterns they're gonna have for the rest of their lives, you know, how important is laying the foundation of how important school really is and kindergarten is the very first step for that," explains Deborah Stark-Garand, an instructional coach.

The registration will continue next week at Blades Elementary. For appointments and more information, you can contact the Seaford School District here.
