Tornado Hits Delmarva Causing Power Outages

Posted: Updated:

LAUREL, De-The National Weather Service has confirmed an EF2 tornado occurred in the Laurel and Seaford, Del. area overnight.

The NWS said there were wind speeds of 120 mph, that started at around 3:38 a.m. at Woodland Ferry Road in Laurel and headed northeast to Pepper Road in Seaford.

Delmarva Power says earlier this morning, nearly seven thousand people were without power in their service area.

By midday those numbers went down to one thousand, and now--their power officials say around 550 homes remain without power after the tornado.

Jim Smith, a spokesperson with Delmarva Power said, "We urge any of our customers that don't have electricity to give us a call and call our customer service line to let us know that, but we want them to be reassured that that this is a large emergency situation," Smith said.

Smith says Delmarva Power had around twenty downed power lines today and crews will be working throughout the night and morning until all power is restored in homes.

"It's all hands on deck. So we have not only our local crews, but crews from Sussex and Kent Counties we have crews from our Wilmington area," he said.

Delmarva Power says some of the worst hit areas were on Seaford Road in Laurel.

We spoke to people living there today, like Carl Hastings who said he heard "Squealing, and then all of a sudden the house started shaking, I mean I've never heard that before, and then the windows started shattering, the wind came through the house."

He said his power went out immediately when the tornado touched down, everything happened so fast.

"As soon as it hit, no electric, there were no lights, it was just pitch black," he said.

People like Marvel Tice says his power went out almost immediately too. He says his family will now rely on generators until power is restored.

"Our friend said she's going to bring us her generator, so we can plug something in, and my son has one that I'm sure we'll be able to at least get the freezer and refrigerator going back again."

For those who still have no power, Delmarva Power is urging that people call their customer service line at 1-800-375-7117, but they said it will take time because it is a large scale emergency.
