WILMINGTON, Del.- Delaware's Gov. John Carney, U.S. Senators Tom Carper and Chris Coons, as well as the First State's lone member of Congress, are endorsing former Vice President Joe Biden's candidacy for president.

Biden, 76, earlier on Thursday announced he was running for president in a video message on Twitter.

In a post on his official Instagram page, Carney issued the following statement:

"Throughout his career in the U.S. Senate and as Vice President, @joebiden has proven time and again that he is a committed public servant, and a true advocate for working families across our country.

"In Delaware, we know Joe as a neighbor and a friend. He has comforted thousands of Delawareans during times of tragedy, and has remained a champion for the people of Delaware through good times and bad.

"I look forward to supporting Joe as he seeks the presidency. I am confident he would be a tremendous president and would be a leader that the American people deserve. He’s just the kind of leader we need right now who can bring the country together."

Immediately after Biden's announcement, Sen. Chris Coons sent out the following statement endorsing the former vice president's candidacy:

“We are at a crucial moment in our history,” Coons said. “We need leaders who will bring us together instead of tearing us apart, who will focus on the real issues facing American families, and who will restore the United States’ role in the world as a force for stability, freedom and human rights. Joe Biden is that leader, and I’m proud to endorse him for President of the United States.

Coons said Biden played a leading role in making the Obama-Biden administration a progressive and effective government that did more to lift up American families, broaden access to health care, deal with climate change, rein in Wall Street, and respect the LGBTQ community than any before it.

“Joe is also better prepared than anyone to lead America on the world stage at a time when our commitments to our allies and our values are being questioned like never before. Joe knows what it means to strengthen our alliances, stare down our adversaries, and represent the best of America abroad.”

Sen. Tom Carper issued the following statement:

“In 1982, it was then-Senator Joe Biden who first encouraged me to run for Delaware’s seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. Eighteen years later, he was the first to encourage me to run for the U.S. Senate. For months, I have encouraged him to seek the highest office in our land and, today, I could not be more proud to endorse my friend Joe as he launches his campaign to be the next President of the United States.

“Throughout his time in public service, Joe has proven that you can disagree without being disagreeable, and that you can compromise on policy without compromising your principles. He is a man of his word and of integrity, and it is that character that has earned him the respect of voters and world leaders alike.

“Joe has spent his career championing policies that help all Americans. He is a tested, experienced leader with a proven track record of getting things done for our country. Alongside President Barack Obama, Joe helped lead our nation out of the greatest economic downturn since the Great Depression. What followed was the longest streak of private sector job growth on record. He helped expand access to quality, affordable health care for millions of Americans under the Affordable Care Act. He wasn’t afraid to stay out of step and lead the way to ensure equality for our LGTBQ friends and family. For years, Joe has understood that we have a moral obligation to address the threat of climate change and leave a safer, healthier planet for future generations, along with a stronger economy. Throughout his career, Joe has been a steadfast champion for our veterans because he understands that those who risk their lives to protect our nation deserve our gratitude and full support.

“Joe is also uniquely positioned to help restore America’s standing in the world. He understands the world. He’s traveled the world. He knows world leaders personally, and they know and respect him. From the moment he takes office, Joe will be ready to lead.

“Joe is not afraid of a fight and has shown that he has what it will take to win. We need somebody who won't just unite our party, but somebody who can unite our country. Joe has earned the respect of Democrats, Independents, and even many Republicans. In an increasingly polarized country, it’s Joe’s authenticity that continues to be well-received in red and blue states alike.

“Even through unimaginable tragedy and triumph, Joe has always had the heart of a servant and an unwavering belief that our country's best days are still ahead. I cannot think of anyone better suited to lead our nation at this critical time than Joe Biden. He knows that our differences hardly compare to the values that we all hold dear as Americans. He knows that our country is strongest when we work to expand opportunities for everyone -- regardless of race, creed, gender or background. And he believes in uniting our nation and creating a brighter future together.

"Joe has been a terrific vice president, an exceptional representative for the people of Delaware, a thoughtful colleague and an even better friend. Even more importantly, though, he is a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather and a dedicated son and brother. It is those qualities that have made him an exceptional human being, and it is those qualities that will enable him to serve with distinction as our next president."

Rep. Blunt Rochester (D-DE) on Thursday released the following statement endorsing Biden's candidacy.

“In November 2020, voters will have a real choice to make. Will they choose to continue down a path that undermines progress, worker protections, and civil rights; will they choose a strong economy for some or opportunity for all, and will they choose to meet this historic moment with proven leadership that can heal our divisions and inspire us to reach for higher heights? I believe the American people will choose hope and compassion over fear by electing Vice President Joe Biden as the next President of the United States,” Rochester said.

“Having known Joe for over 30 years, I can speak to his character, love of country, and ability to help heal others in times of tragedy and despair. He has experienced loss and grief and knows what it takes to meet that pain with the optimism that our best days are ahead of us. We need an experienced leader who embodies our best values and can bring back stability, integrity, and honor to our country. Joe is the right leader for this moment in history. I am excited to endorse his candidacy, and I look forward to working with him to restore the soul of this nation, rebuild the middle class, and unify our country."

Also endorsing Biden on Thursday was Pennsylvania's Democratic U.S. Sen. Bob Casey, who in a statement touted Biden as a fighter for the middle class who can beat President Donald Trump in Pennsylvania if Biden becomes the Democratic nominee.
