Lewes' Parking Meters go Live Wednesday

Posted: Updated:

LEWES, Del. - A summer season staple has arrived at the beaches: paying for parking.

Lewes' meters go online Wednesday at 9 a.m. This year, meter hours are extending by two hours daily, meaning visitors will have to pay to park until 8 p.m. The city is also adding a 50 cent convenience fee for credit card usage.

Local businesses are already preparing for the parking changes.

"Lewes Gourmet & Puzzles always has a ready supply of quarters and we have already educated ourself about how the new meters work,"  Andrea Spuck of Lewes Gourmet & Puzzles said. "And so I am sure that all season long, we will be supplying quarters to anybody who needs them and helping them figure out the new meter system."

The city of Lewes says the new meter hours will generate $140,000 worth of revenue this summer. Nearby Rehoboth and Bethany's meters go on in mid to late May.
