Updated: Vietnam Veteran Memorial Moving Wall on Display in Lewes

Posted: Updated:

LEWES, Del.- American Legion Post 17 is now hosting the Vietnam Veteran Memorial's Moving Wall exhibit at the Cape May-Lewes Terminal.

From Thursday, May 16 at 3 p.m. until until Monday, May 20 at 2 p.m., Post 17 is sponsoring the volunteer-driven event. The Moving Wall is a half-size replica of the original Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC.

Volunteers and veterans carried the wall panels one by one.

" I don't own it but, I earned it. This is my wall," says Sgt. Frank Bolen from Dagsboro. Sgt. Bolen served in the Vietnam War when he was only 18. Bolen carried panel 27-W that displays the names of five of his fellow soldier.

"I picked the panel up and then I looked right down, and five of my buddies were right there in front of my eyes," he says.

The Moving Wall has been touring the country for the last 30-plus years.

“The ferry is proud to be a part of this unique combination of reflection, remembrance and celebration,” said Heath Gehrke, director of ferry operations for the Cape May-Lewes Ferry. “Lewes has a unique place in the annals of American maritime history and the ferry is part of that history. The U.S. Merchant Marine has a proud history of supporting our Nation’s military, including during the Vietnam War. We hope the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Moving Wall can help those who are still impacted by the war to find solace and that others, too young to fully comprehend that era, will learn about the sacrifices and dedication of the men and women of the U.S. Merchant Marine and Armed Forces.”

Admission to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Moving Wall is free.
