DOVER, Del. - The state of Delaware collected 5,385 pounds of unwanted or expired medicine during its annual prescription take-back event in April, an increase from the last event.

According to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and the Division of Public Health, police collected 1,600 pounds more on April 27th's event than it did in October, which netted a total of 3,739 pounds of medicine.

There 24 drop-off locations for the event in April, with 21 of those locations open all year.

Health officials estimate that nearly six million Americans misused controlled prescription drugs in 2017. The study also showed that many people who abused the medication got it from family or friends, and oftentimes the home medicine cabinet. According to the state of Delaware, there have been 84 suspected overdose deaths in the state since January 1, 2019. Last year, state authorities say 400 Delawareans died from drug overdoses.

Health officials urges the public to keep medications locked away, or to drop them off at a permanent drop-off location when they are no longer needed or have expired.

Since the first drug take-back day in May of 2010, officials said the state has collected more than 90,000 pounds of unwanted medicine.
