Construction of Bayhealth Outpatient Services Building in Milford Moves Forward

MILFORD, Del.- The next phase of Bayhealth's multi-million dollar expansion is underway in Milford.

On Wednesday, a "topping out" ceremony was held for the new Nemours Sussex Medical Office Building, located on the Bayhealth Sussex Campus in Milford. A "topping out" ceremony, when the last beam is put into place, represents the end of the steel phase of construction. When complete, Nemours will use 35,000 square feet on the first floor and Bayhealth and private practice physicians will be on the second and third floors.

"This has been a long time coming," says Valerie Biggs from Milton, whose eight children have special medical needs. "There's such a need for this and the fact that the realization is finally here and you can see its coming-- it's going to make such an impact to the community because there just aren't enough specialists and doctors here for children with any type of a need."

Biggs currently drives to Nemours in Wilmington for her children's treatments and appointments, an hour and a half drive. When the new facility opens, her drive will cut down to just twenty minutes. Those with Nemours say the myriad of services offered on site will provide a unique convenience as well.

"Healthcare can be very difficult to experience," says Nemours Roy Proujansky, MD, the Chief Executive of Nemours Delaware Valley Operations. "Transportation can be a challenge even for those of us who have easy mobility and being able to have a cluster of services in one location [...] all of that is really helpful to patients and families.

Once open, Nemours will offer pediatric and senior services, including:

·        Specialty Care: Allergy, audiology, behavioral health, cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, general surgery, neurology, orthopedics, otolaryngology (ENT), pulmonology, urology and weight management
·        Therapy Services: Physical, occupational and speech therapy
·        Diagnostic Services: EKG, ECHO, EEG, spirometry, X-ray, and ultrasound
·        Primary Pediatric Care: Routine, well and sick child care, immunizations, care for all stages – birth through adolescence

Nemours SeniorCare, Sussex Campus will provide dental and vision services, as well as hearing screening, for eligible Delaware residents.

Bayhealth CEO Terry Murphy says the "topping out" ceremony is just the beginning for the 169 acre site.

"This is tied in with our hospital and outpatient center which is very busy and receiving rave reviews from our patients," he says. "This is just another piece and over the long term it will serve the growing healthcare needs of Sussex County, so it's just exciting."
