Gov. Hogan, Mayor Meehan Kick-Off Summer Season With Reenactment in Ocean City

OCEAN CITY, Md.- Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan joined Ocean City Mayor Rick Meehan in celebrating the start of the busy summer season.

During a summer kickoff press conference Friday, the pair reenacted a special event that took place more than 70 years ago, placing the first umbrella of the season in the sand on the beach.

"I think I've spent just about every single Memorial Day weekend here most of my life," Hogan told WBOC after the event. "It's going to be a beautiful weekend and we're just happy to kick-off the official start of summer."

The ceremonial placing of the umbrella first took place in 1946 under then-Gov. Harry O'Connor and Ocean City Mayor Daniel Trimper, Jr.
