College Students Spend Summer Starting Brewery In Salisbury

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md. - Breweries are becoming a booming industry in Salisbury, but for two college students it will be a balance between beer and school.

Garrett Morris and Shawn Wierzbowski are Salisbury University students that decided to take their hobby to the next level.

"Garrett has been my best friend since freshman year and we both love beer and I said dude we've got to do something like this," Wierzbowski said. "The first step was to make beer out of his dorm room."

The two have come up with a concept to make craft beers affordable for a younger audience, hence Broke Boys Brewing Company.

"Since we have such a small system and we are able to keep our start up costs low we're going to be able to sell our beer at a little bit of a lower price which will attract those kinds of people to come in," Morris said.

Morris and Wierzbowski began creating different crafts for themselves and friends, eventually making friends with the owners of the Eastern Shore Wine & Beer Supply store.

The owners suggested if they needed a place to start their business, they could rent out the back storage space.

The pair entered into an SU Business Competition last month and received Mayor Jake Day's prized grant that will cover their start up costs.

"It's very touching to know that we go to Salisbury and we have the mayor and the government officials behind us as well," Morris said.

Morris and Wierzbowski plan to move into the back of the supply store over the summer, with an anticipated opening date in November.
