LEWES, Del.- The Lewes Board of Public Works is warning customers of a possible data breach of their customer information system.

In a letter sent to customers on Wednesday, the utility company revealed that the Department of Homeland Security alerted it of the possible breach on Tuesday. Homeland Security said it received information suggesting a hacker copied customer information.

Hackers potentially had access to customer names, credit and debit card information, and other financial information.

Lewes BPW says it is not aware of any actual misuse of information. But it says affected customers will receive a phone call, letter, and email.

Lewes BPW is working with state and federal agencies to find a resolution to the issues.

According to Lewes BPW, "To protect yourself from the possibility of identity theft or fraud, we recommend that you immediately contact your credit or debit card company, or bank as the case may be, and inform them that your information may have been compromised, and to follow any steps they may recommend. We also recommend that you review your credit card and banking statements and report any suspicious activity to your financial institution. And please consider changing password and security questions on affected accounts."

For questions, Lewes BPW can be reached at 302-645-6228.
