Updated: Easton YMCA Back Open Following Deadly Stabbing

Posted: Updated:

EASTON, Md.- The Easton Family YMCA reopened Monday morning, days after a man was stabbed to death in the men's locker room.

Thirty-year-old Andre LaMont Price Jefferson, of Easton, is charged with first- and second-degree murder, as well as robbery and assault charges in connection with Thursday's incident that claimed the life of 72-year-old John Joseph Cassidy. Jefferson is being held without bond at the Talbot County Detention Center.

According to police, on Thursday morning Jefferson first went to Easton Middle School on Peachblossom Road. Police said students were not yet at the school when Jefferson entered the building. He was recognized by school staff, since he was a former student. He was asked to leave and that is when police said he crossed the street and entered the YMCA. Jefferson is reportedly not a member of the gym but was somehow able to get into the men's locker room. That is where police said they believe he attempted to steal from lockers.

At some point, there was an altercation that occurred inside the locker room between Jefferson and Cassidy, also of Easton. Police said Jefferson stabbed Cassidy several times with a knife. When they arrived on the scene, at around 8 a.m., they found Cassidy on the locker room floor and Jefferson in the front lobby, incoherent.

Both men were transported by ambulance to the University of Maryland Shore Medical Center in Easton. Cassidy later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

Following the incident the Easton YMCA was closed the rest of the day Thursday and was also closed on Friday. On Friday, the "Easton Family YMCA" announced on Facebook that the center would reopen Monday morning, July 10.

The YMCA on Sunday night held a candlelight in honor of Cassidy and his family. Religious leaders of different denominations attended the vigil.
