GEORGETOWN, Del.- Delaware State Police say a 73-year-old man died after the minivan he was driving collided head-on with a box truck in Georgetown late Thursday afternoon.

Police said the incident happened shortly before 4 p.m., when a Chrysler Town & Country minivan was traveling eastbound on Old Furnace Road just east of Rementer Road and negotiating a slight right curve. Troopers said that is when, for an unknown reason, the minivan failed to maintain the proper travel lane and crossed into the opposing travel lane, striking a Ford 6-wheel box truck head-on.

Police said the driver of the minivan, a 73-year-old man from Rehoboth Beach, was properly restrained. He was transported  to the Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford where he was pronounced deceased.  His name is being withheld pending the notification of next of kin.

Police said the minivan was a registered Delaware taxi, and was transporting two passengers who were both properly restrained.  A 21-year-old male passenger, from Georgetown, was transported to Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, Md., where he was admitted for observation only.  The second passenger, a 20-year-old Georgetown man, was transported to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and released.

Police said the driver of the box truck, a 30-year-old man from Bridgeville, was properly restrained. He was transported to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital and later transferred to the Christiana Hospital in serious condition.

Old Furnace Road in the area of Rementer Road was closed for three-and-a-half hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.

The crash continues to remain under investigation by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit.
