"Cool Things to Do" This Father's Day Weekend

Posted: Updated:
Another beautiful summer weekend brings tons of events to the Delmarva Peninsula, from air power to flower power.

On Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. is the 29th Annual Lewes Garden Tour. Put on by the Lewes Chamber of Commerce, ticket holders get a walking tour through nine of the First Town in the First State's private gardens.

"We are an old historic town and the way the lots are built as you can see the very front part of the yard is small but the backyards open up," says Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Betsy Reamer. "That's a treat for people to be able to go into these private gardens."

In addition to the garden tour on Saturday only is the 62nd Annual Old Timer's Day Classic Car & Truck Show in Selbyville, Del. Vehicles from before 1988 will line Church Street for perusal and competition, though this year there are some new features, including a beer garden from Crooked Hammock.

"This year we are working with a local photographer and we have a pin up girl competition from the eras of the 40s and 50s to kind of match the cars you are going to see," says Bethany-Fenwick Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Lauren Weaver.

Also on Saturday in central Sussex County, Del. is the Juneteenth Celebration. At 10 a.m. Saturday, there is a parade, entertainment, and more, all celebrating the Emancipation Proclamation and the day slaves learned they were free. The day will include tours of the historic Richard Allen School on South Railroad Avenue, one of 80 schools built in the 19th and 20th century to educate African-American students.

But Sussex County isn't the only event hub this weekend. For the 12th year, the OC Air Show zooms into Worcester County, Md. On Saturday and Sunday, military displays will be on hand, and the Blue Angels and Canadian Snowbirds will perform.

"It's very family friendly, patriotic in nature," explains Air Show Public Relations Director Chris Dirato. "You come out and see how these highly trained and talented pilots maneuver their planes in the skies."

Dirato advises people arrive early due to traffic.

If you'd rather sit back and relax rather than get an adrenaline rush, visit the grand opening of the Off-Centered On the Rocks at the Lewes Ferry Terminal. The ferry has partnered with Dogfish Head Brewery to transform some green space into an area with a fire pit, lawn games, space for live music, and custom Dogfish head drinks and food. Ferry Director of Operations Heath Gehrke says the ferry also built a new slip outside the area so people can cruise up for some brews on the Delaware Bay.

"It's a cool place to hang out, relax, have a few Dogfish Head beers," he explains. "Look at the view: there's not many places like this around and I think it's a special place."
