(REHOBOTH BEACH, Del.) - The American Warrior Initiative (AWI) was started by Fairway Independent Mortgage Corporation when they saw a need to serve their veterans. One of the ways they do that is by sponsoring training for service dogs.

The Fairway Mortgage Independent Corporation in conjunction with AWI host the 2nd annual Pups Patrol for Heroes, their biggest fundraising event of the year for Delaware. Here, owners can enter their dogs in a show and/or a dog walk down the boardwalk, and adoptable dogs from the Brandywine Valley SPCA meet and greet with the crowd, hoping to find their forever homes. A couple of service dogs join them, one who is now named after a fallen Navy Seal.

During a dedication ceremony Saturday morning, Vaughn is presented to an AWI ambassador, who is also the mother of Aaron Vaughn. "My son Aaron was a Navy Seal, he was a member of Seal Team 6. He fought for 9 years in this war and lost his life on August 6th 2011," Karen Vaughn explains.

Senior Vice President of Fairway Independent Mortgage Corporation, Kimberly Grim, says the whole event is held in honor of the veterans. "They went to war to save us and now it's time for us to save them and we are donating service dogs to them."

Grim says that every a loan closes, the mortgage company donates money towards their AWI foundation. She says Pups Patrol for Heroes has raised $25,000 so far.

According to Grim, it costs about $20,000 to train a service dog. Fairway Independent Mortgage Corporation in conjunction with the American Warriors Initiative have set a goal to help train 52 service dogs in 2019. Through a partnership with Tails of Valor, they have sponsored two service dogs in Delaware that are present at the event. One is Vaugh and the other is named Loftus.

Loftus now serves Jason Harar, who once served in the United States Marine Corps and Army Resevrves. "I want to be able to give back to the veteran like Tails of Valor did for me," he says.

Harar does just that by now helping train service dogs like Vaughn. "Because he's so young, it's the name game and basic obedience and so it's a lot of playtime with them," he shares.

Now Fairway will watch as Vaughn goes through his training and the mortgage company plans to present him to a veteran at the 3rd annual pups patrol for heroes next year.

"The thought of a dog who's going to be named after my boy, it's an extraordinary gift to me. This dog will save a veterans life," says Karen Vaughn.

Karen Vaughn has a national bestseller on the market. It is titled World Changes: A Mother's Story. In this novel, she shares her son's journey to becoming a warrior for this country.
