Campaign Recap: Candidates Defend Race

Posted: Updated:

CAMPAIGN TRAIL- Many Presidential candidates came to the side of contender Kamala Harris over the weekend follow commotion on Twitter.

During Thursday's debate, President Donald Trump's son Donald Trump Jr. retweeted  critic of California Senator Kamala Harris, who took issue with her racial identity. The critic, who identified as African American, tweeted in part, "Kamala Harris is not an American black. She is half Indian an half Jamaican. I'm so sick of people robbing American blacks like myself of our history."

A spokesman for Trump Jr. told the New York Times that it was all a misunderstanding. He said Trump Jr. was simply asking if it was true that she was part Indian. The spokesman said when Trump Jr. saw people misconstruing his intentions of the tweet, he deleted it from his timeline.

A Harris spokesman dismissed the attack, saying that people, including President Trump, used similar rhetoric to question Former President Barack Obama's birthplace.
