Lewes Public Hearing Set for Shields Elementary Project

Posted: Updated:

LEWES, Del - A public hearing on the Shields Elementary School project will take place on July 30. The decision was made at Monday's Lewes City Council meeting.

It is the latest step in a process that could lead to the renovation of the Lewes School building on Savannah Road. According to the project plan, it will become the new Shields Elementary School, capable of accommodating up to 720 students.

Completion of the Sussex Consortium, located along Sweetbriar Road, is dictating the start time of the elementary school project.

"Now we are looking at January to February (of the consortium completion)," Director of Capital Projects Brian Bassett explained. "The only delay is because of good news, the state gave us about $13 million extra funding. Now we are catching those areas up where we got the funding."

Once operational, the current Shields site will be demolished.

"We expect in the next few years a plan will come forward for a new middle school (at that site)," said Lewes City Manager Ann Marie Townsend.

The Shields Elementary plan calls for keeping the historic front of the Lewes school intact while redoing the rest of the building.
