WORCESTER COUNTY, Md.- The Opportunity Zone Program is designed to boost economic development in Worcester County.

Berlin, Snow Hill, and downtown Ocean City have been designated as opportunity zones by the U.S. Treasury.

"The governors of the U.S. states nominated certain areas in their jurisdictions based on qualifying census tracks, which would be the income level of households in the community and the certain level of percentage of poverty level that's here," said Worcester County Economic Development Director Kathryn Gordon.

The program offers private investors tax incentives if they invest in what's called the opportunity zone fund.

The money in that fund can be used by eligible people looking to develop or re-develop property in the designated zones.

"It still needs to be a profitable project, worth it for a developer to get involved in such as a hotel, new restaurant, mixed-use project," said Ocean City Development Corporation Executive Director Glenn Irwin.

A public meeting to discuss the program will take place Friday, July 12 at 2 p.m. at the Worcester County Library in Berlin. The meeting is open to the public.
