Baltimore Area Man Injures Neck while Diving in Ocean City

Posted: Updated:

OCEAN CITY, Md.- Nineteen-year-old Ben Paepcke dove into shallow waters at the beach in Ocean City and broke his neck and suffered a spinal cord injury.

He's now recovering at the University of Maryland's Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. RJ Hayman was one of the lifeguards who rescued Paepcke and says he was face down in the water after he dove in.

"Unfortunately, one of them didn't get up, one of them stayed down in the water," says Hayman.

Paepcke broke his neck and suffered a spinal cord injury.

Ocean City lifeguards say they're trained to respond to diving accidents, but hope they never have to use that training.

"I think every lifeguard says the same thing when you see somebody going into the diving motion in shallow water," says lifeguard Matt Postell.

Mary DiBartolo was at the beach when the accident happened and says the diving accident is her fear as a swimmer.

"It's a tragedy to have a neck injury like that; you have to exercise caution," DiBartolo said.

Paepcke's family has set up a GoFundMe page for his recovery. https://www.gofundme.com/d5tusu-prayers-for-pap
