Posted: Updated:

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del - Wednesday was the day 22 mostly high school age students from the American Sign Language Summer Camp got their day at the beach. They spent approximately an hour on the sand and in the ocean. Later it was dinner at Grotto Pizza followed by time on the boardwalk.

"For some kids its their first time (at the beach) and it is just a great experience to get together," Mary Hicks, a bilingual specialist with the camp, explained.

The participants are deaf or hard of hearing. Several like Selbyville's Roberto Maldonado are the only ones at their respective schools who use sign language to communicate. The camp provides him interaction with students his own age with similar experiences.

"It is a lot of fun and I enjoy hanging out with my friends and chatting with them," Maldonado said.

The camp is based at the Delaware School For the Deaf in Newark, Del. This week's camp is one of three held in July.  Next week is a session for Kindergarten - 4th graders followed by 5th - 8th graders the week of July 22.

Hicks indicated that the combined number of 2019's participants is the largest ever in the seven year history of the camp
