Petition on Main Street Annexation

Posted: Updated:

BERLIN, M.d -More business off Route 50? Some people in Worcester County are saying no, thank you.

Property owner, Spiro Buas, wants to build a convenience store at the intersection of Route 50 and Main street in Berlin.

But not everyone in town wants to see that happen, they've started a petition to halt the project and it's required annexation.

"It's about giving everyone in Berlin the chance to have their say on whether or not they think it's a good idea or not," says Smith.

Buas believes having a convenience store in Berlin would bring more people to Berlin, and some people agree.

"I think it'll make good on 50 for people going into Ocean City," says Mary Jane, who works in Berlin.

Smith also worries about the stores location. He says increased traffic at the proposed site could be dangerous.

"That is a very tight and dangerous intersection, so there are issues about whether or not it's safe to put a major convenience store like that."

A petition, many neighbors are hoping slows the annexation process down, and allows neighbors to voice their concerns.

Smith has until tomorrow to get about 100 more signatures. You must be from the town of Berlin to sign the petition.
