Wicomico County Student Wins State Essay Competition "If I Were Mayor, I Would..."

SALISBURY, Md.- A Wicomico County student has won the grand prize for the annual essay competition, "If I were Mayor, I would...".

Dylan Rosas-Rivera, a fourth grader at Pinehurst Elementary School, was selected as the winner this year. In his essay, Rosas-Rivera said he loved Salisbury and, as mayor, would promote tourism, affordable housing and paid internships for high school students.

"I just kept re-writing it until I was happy with the results," Rosas-Rivera said.

As a part of the award, Rosas-Rivera was celebrated in a ceremony in Annapolis and met face to face with Salisbury Mayor Jake Day.

"Mayor Day was very nice," says Rosas-Rivera. "He expects a lot of me, he said one day I might be sitting on his chair as mayor."

More than 2,700 students, from Maryland, participated in the contest organized by the Maryland Municipal League and the Maryland Mayors Association.
