Wicomico Co. Executive's First Town Hall Gives Community the Microphone

Posted: Updated:

WICOMICO COUNTY, Md.- Wicomico County Executive Bob Culver and his administration hosted the first of many countywide town halls on Thursday night.

The meeting allowed the community to ask any questions or discuss any problems within their area.  Nothing seemed to be off the table.

In the crowd, department heads like Director of Public Works Dallas Baker and Director of Recreation, Parks & Tourism Steve Miller sat to take notes and answer specific questions about projects.

One of the first questions of the night came from Virginia Vitello regarding the recent changes to tax bills.  Those living in the city of Salisbury would be getting a separate tax bill this year and she wanted to know why.

"I couldn't understand why it was so low, the one I received and then I started calling around and they said, 'Oh no, that's only half the bill, you're going to get a separate one,'" Vitello said.

The executive and his staff responded that all other municipalities within the county have the same practice, but this was a city decision.

"There was tension over it, yes ma'am. But we ended up giving them two years to get their new system set up and help them get started with it," Culver said.

But Vitello was not the only one to ask questions to the executive.

Neighbors from the Porter Mill Road area came before the county leaders once again to discuss a new sludge storage tank affecting their community.

"Can this product eventually seep down into the groundwater and contaminate shallow wells?" Lynnette Kenney asked.

Kenney and other neighbors wanted to know if the project could be stopped, the impacts the sludge tanks could face, etc.

While that subject was more complicated, the executive staff took down notes to get back to neighbors with time.

Culver said he wants to make these town halls a monthly event throughout the county.  The next meeting will be held on Aug. 21 at the Parsonsburg Fire Department.
