Porter Mill Road Neighbors Ask County For Help With Sludge Storage Tank Project

HEBRON, Md.- People who live in the Porter Mill Road area of Wicomico County continue to ask the county for assistance with a new sludge storage tank project.

After being granted a building permit from the county, a 3 million gallon sludge storage tank is cleared to start construction.  But neighbors fear of what that will mean for their quality of life. 

"We don't want the tank at all, I mean the tank is okay, but we don't want the stuff that's in the tank," neighbor Pam Olszewski said. 

The tank would be less than a mile from Olszewski's home.  She says not only is there a concern for things like smell and bugs from the chicken by product in the tank, but also traffic it will bring to the rural back roads.

"Most of us do not want the tank at all, it's not just the smell and flies. It's also the traffic that could be any time, day or night up to 500 trucks coming down our road," Olszewski said. 

Cindy Daugherty fears what exactly is inside the tank to begin with.

"There's no way of knowing what's in the tank because it's such a variety of sources from what I understand. We don't know if it's safe. We don't know what's going to happen if this thing overflows," Daugherty said. 

The tank will be used to house agricultural by product that farmers apply to fields for nutrients. 

Director of Planning & Zoning and Community Development Lori Carter say a lot is going on behind the scenes to address these neighbors concerns. 

"We are working very steadily to make sure the due process takes place," Carter said. 

After more than 80 neighbors signed a petition to try to stop the project, the county council suggested they meet with the Agricultural Reconciliation Committee.

"Their [the committee's] role is looking at those issues as it relates to a nuisance being able to hear those things, what some of the persons have had some concerns about in regards to the smells and things of that nature," Carter said.

The meeting between neighbors and the committee is expected to happen sometime in August.  Meanwhile some of the neighbors plan to hear what the council has to say at Tuesday morning's meeting.
