GEORGETOWN, Del. (AP)- The Delaware Coastal Airport has received almost $700,000 in federal grants to support its runway extension project.

Delaware State News reports U.S. Sen. Tom Carper and Sussex County representatives announced Friday that the county had received two Federal Aviation Administration grants for general airport operations and to extend the current runway by 500 feet (152 meters). The paper says the extension will allow larger planes to land at the airport.

Over the past decade, the FAA has invested almost $40 million in the airport for improvements to encourage business growth. The paper says the airport is an economic driver to the region.

County officials and state lawmakers say they hope the expansion will boost job growth and the economy.
