Nighttime Lane Closures on Route One Begin

Posted: Updated:

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del.- Ahead of a major bridge project this fall, the Delaware Department of Transportation is closing lanes on Route One on weeknights through the summer.

Both northbound and southbound lanes on the bridge over the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal will close at separate times for preparation work related to the bridge's September replacement.  Flaggers will be on site to help direct motorists overnight.

"It's definitely going to have an effect on the traveling public but we try to minimize the effect by just doing Sunday through Thursday night," explains DelDOT Engineer George Pierce.

The lane closures begin at 9 p.m. and end at 6 a.m. The closures are expected to last until the bridge overhaul begins on September 23rd.

"Anyone who has driven over the bridge knows that it rocks your car, it flips the trailer you're pulling--it's just not a smooth ride for anyone," Pierce says. "So we are going to fix all that [...] if you think of it like a house, we are going to strip the house down to its foundation and framework and rebuild everything from there out."

Locals say the the summer night work won't be too much of a burden, but it will be a different story when the fall work begins.

"That's going to take it down to one lane going one way and two lanes going the other way and that could cause backups all the way to Five Points and it could also cause backups all the way to Bethany," says Bin 66 Wine and Spirits owner Tom Poor. "If people are considering coming to their favorite wine shop, from the country club or King's Creek or some place, they may not choose to come down here because if it's a rolling back up I wouldn't get in it either."

The bridge work is scheduled to finish in May. For more on the summer lane impacts and the impending bridge work, click here.
