Worcester "Goes Purple"

Posted: Updated:

BERLIN, Md--Another community is going purple, this time it's Worcester County.

The campaign is all about promoting conversations on drug addiction. It's a statewide awareness program, all about encouraging the youth and community to feel more comfortable with discussing drug addiction.

"Addiction is an illness just as if you have a heart condition or if you are diabetic. I think the stigma involved has created barriers to make people feel uncomfortable with going forward," says Debbie Smullen, program coordinator.

The actual kickoff isn't until August, but in the meantime, Smullen says she's reaching out to make sure they have the entire community on board.

"We are working with all of the Chambers of Commerce in Worcester county, we're working with the town government to get them to put purple lights."

A program hoping to save lives and educate the entire community, starting with the color purple.

The official kickoff will take place August 22 at the Shorebirds Stadium.
