HARRINGTON, Del.- Many people associate the Delaware State Fair with extremely hot weather --- some of them even felt the oppressively warm temperature on Thursday was appropriate for the event as it kicked off its centennial celebration.

"It's too hot but it always is. It's always hot or raining," said Renne Whitemore of Seaford, who was among the first people to visit the fair as it kicked off on Thursday.

For many people, the heat is bad enough when you are just walking around the fairgrounds but Clint Yoder, who works with food vendor Little Richard's, said the temperatures are even worse when you're working over a hot grill.

"We just drink a lot of water, we'll stand in front of a fan, but for the most part we're ready and expecting the heat," he said.

The fairgrounds do have a nurses station where people can head to if they are feeling sick.

Jill Tatman, a registered nurse there, said people should try to limit the amount of fair food or sugary drinks they consume.

"Try to stay away from the caffeine drinks or really sugary drinks," she said. "Water is the best."
