Cool Things to do on Delmarva July 19-21

Posted: Updated:

SUSSEX COUNTY, Del.- Despite a dangerous heat wave, there's plenty of cool things to do on Delmarva this weekend.

On Saturday, the MERR Institute is hosting its annual dolphin count at various locations up and down the coast.  During the count, volunteers simply keep track of the amount of dolphins they see for two hours in their designated site--providing informal but valuable information about the dolphin population.

"It's a way that people can get involved and do something to help these animals with a minimal investment in time," Executive Director Suzanne Thurman says. "They get this chance to do something that contributes to the overall well being of dolphins."

Also on Saturday on the coast is the Ocean Games-- an open swim that raises awareness and support for traumatic brain injuries.

All weekend in Dewey Beach is a Christmas in July fest for another good cause--the Dewey Claus Crawl. All the activities raise money for the Winter Wonderfest, Sussex County's Christmas festival that in the past three years provided $150,000 in grants.

"Saturday we have six parties, everything from Ralphie's Revenge with a Christmas Story theme to Jingle Jam at the Bottle and Cork to White Out Snow Rave at Northbeach to end the night, we've got something for everybody here that are 21 and over," says Winter Wonderfest's Peter Briccotto.

If you're less into holidays and more into history, the Delaware River and Bay Lighthouse Foundation is offering tours of the historic Harbor of Refuge Lighthouse on Saturday as well--the first of many for the summer.

"It's probably one of the most unique tours in the Sussex County area," says Foundation President Red Mouliner. "Just to go out on a mile and a half break water and actually climb to the top of this lighthouse and get a different, completely different view of what the Lewes and the Delaware Bay's all about."
