Excitement Builds for 94th Annual Chincoteague Pony Swim

CHINCOTEAGUE, Va. - Excitement is building as visitors are counting down to the 94th Annual Chincoteague Pony Swim

Hundreds are gathering in the coastal town ahead of Wednesday morning's big swim and auction. The ponies are ready -- they've been brought to a pen on Assateague over the last several days. They were checked by a vet Tuesday and will take part in the big event Wednesday morning.

For one Richmond, Va., visitor, it's the auction she's most looking forward to.

"Probably trying to get on of them," Kelly Dirom said. "I'd just like to have one that would come back to the island that no one would ever be able to buy again. That would be like kind of your contribution maybe to Chincoteague."

But before the pony auction can even happen, the animals have to swim across the channel. Fellow first-timer Nancy Clark flew in from New Mexico to see the swim with her friends. It's something she says her and her partner have waited a lifetime to see.

"Both of our partners got in to Chincoteague ponies when they were like three or four or five," Clark said. "They've always wanted to come and this year, most of them are in the 60's, but I'm the old lady. I'm in my 70's, but we finally made it."

If you can't make the pony swim, you can watch live coverage of the event on the WBOC News app or the WBOC Facebook page, brought to you by our friends at Safford of Salisbury

The event is expected to get underway sometime between 9 and 9:45 a.m.
