PRINCESS ANNE, Md.- A judge on Wednesday sentenced a Princess Anne man to life in prison without the possibility of parole for gunning down a man who bought a vehicle from him.

Prosecutors said that on Sept. 24, 2017, Sumpter shot Arthur Alford twice in the head at close range inside a vehicle while parked in a driveway on Freetown Road in Princess Anne. Sumpter then dragged Alford out of the vehicle and left him lying in the driveway. Sumpter then drove off in Alford’s vehicle.

Alford was later pronounced dead at Peninsula Regional Medical Center.

An investigation revealed Alford had bought the vehicle from Sumpter just a day before the murder. Detectives were then able to locate the vehicle and murder weapon less than a mile away later that evening. Sumpter was linked to that handgun through DNA as well as email and Google searches related to that handgun found on his phone.

In April, a Somerset County jury convicted Donte Sumpter, 35, on all counts including first- and second-degree murder, armed robbery, armed carjacking and use of a firearm in a violent crime.

On Wednesday, Judge Daniel Powell handed down the life sentence for Sumpter. Prosecutors noted that Sumpter has two prior felony convictions for first-degree assault and armed robbery.

Somerset County State’s Attorney Wess Garner prosecuted the case with the assistance of Ella Disharoon. He commended the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit, specifically Cpl. Scott Sears, for their exceptional work in the investigation and assistance in the prosecution of this case.
