South Bethany Advocating for Safety Improvements on Route One

Posted: Updated:

SOUTH BETHANY, Del.- South Bethany is hoping to make safety improvements to Route One by next summer.

At Thursday's Town Council Workshop, the council discussed forming a coalition with neighboring towns to address safety concerns. Mayor Tim Saxton says a majority of the safety concerns are people crossing the highway to get to the beach.

"We would like to work with other communities that have a lot of pedestrian and bicycle crossings," Saxton says. "Then maybe get together and talk with DelDOT about what other things could we do to make it safer to get our renters and residents across."

Some safety ideas include adding lighting and reducing the speed limit on the highway. Saxton says he and Town Manager Maureen Hartman plan to reach out to nearby places like Bethany Beach and Middlesex.

"We do like to work with our other municipalities and we do believe there is strength in numbers," Hartman tells WRDE. "Sadly they all have the same issues that we are dealing with as well."

The proposal comes weeks after a cyclist was killed crossing Route One.
