Bethany Beach Breaks Ground on New Park

BETHANY BEACH, Del. - Bethany Beach's town council broke ground Friday on the town's first ever park.

This 1.14 million dollar project will be open year around.  Joan Gordon says the park will be put to good use.

"A very lovely serene place to walk without crossing route one," Gordon tells WRDE. "It will give us something on this side of the highway."

The town's plans for the park began in 2012. With the help of the community, officials are transforming this piece of land in the heart of Bethany.  Mike Baiocco, a project manager at Kercher construction engineering, is confident that the park will open as planned.

"This project is scheduled to be completed around Christmas of this year," he explains. "It's normal for this type of project to be this long."

This is a monumental project with a big name. The park will be called Central Park in tribute to New York's City Central Park and also because its located right on Central Avenue.

Mayor Lew Killmer says the new park will showcase even more of Bethany's beauty.

"People say this is a nice alternative to our wonderful beach," he says. "Our beach brings them here and I hope the park keeps them here."

The town plans to build walking paths, picnic pavilions and provide be free parking.
