MILTON, Del.- Authorities have released the name of a man who died early Monday morning after the car he was driving crashed into a tree in Milton.

Delaware State Police identified the victim as 48-year-old George D. Berkowitz, of Hamburg, N.J.

Troopers said the incident occurred at around 12:40 a.m. Monday, when a 2017 Chevrolet Impala was traveling eastbound on Chestnut Street at an extremely high rate of speed and approaching the intersection of Church Street within the town limits of Milton. The speed limit in this area is 25 mph. Police said the Impala went off the roadway and struck a large standing tree in the front yard of a home. Police said Berkowitz, who was driving the Impala, was ejected from the car prior to the impact with the tree.

Debris from the vehicle struck the occupied home. However, there were no reported injuries to any of the home's occupants.

Chestnut Street was closed for approximately three hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.

The crash continues to remain under investigation by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit.
