OCEAN CITY, Md.- One of Delmarva's biggest summertime events starts Monday. It's the 46th Annual White Marlin Open, which bills itself as the "world's largest and richest billfish tournament."

The tournament, which will be held Aug. 5-9, awards prize money for catches of white marlin, blue marlin, tuna, wahoo, dolphin and shark. White Marlin Open organizers said 158 boats were pre-registered for this year's tournament. Any other boats that wanted to participate registered over the weekend.

The first tournament, held in 1974, drew 57 boats, 150 anglers and paid $20,000 in prize money with the top award of $5,000. The event has continued to grow in size since then: in 2018 it drew 382 boats, more than 3,000 contestants, and paid out $5.4 million in prize money, including the top individual award of $2.5 million. White Marlin Open founder and president Jim Motsko said he expects this year's total purse will be approximately $6 million.

All fish reeled in during the tournament must be weighed on the official scale at Harbour Island, (14th Street and the Bay). The weigh-ins are held there each day from 4-9:15 p.m. and are open to the public free of charge.

Even before the start of this week's White Marlin Open, excitement was in the air after word got out that NBA legend Michael Jordan's 80-foot Viking yacht "Catch 23," was registered to participate in the event. The boat arrived last Wednesday at Ocean City's Sunset Marina. There is no word yet if Jordan himself will be fishing in the tournament.
