Public Meeting Held Tonight On Sussex Montessori

Posted: Updated:

SEAFORD, DE-There's a new public charter school coming to Seaford and it has many excited.

The new school offers an alternative to the traditional learning environment through hand-on learning.

The school will be constructed at the former Wheaton Farm on Stein Highway, and in 2020, the school plans to open and serve kindergarten through third grade students, adding a year every year after that until the sixth grade.

By 2023, the school hopes to operate at full capacity.

Kaneisha Trott, a spokesperson with the school says they hope to break ground by the end of summer or early fall.

"We'll be constructing five new classroom pods that will house our kindergarten and third grade students. We're currently on the site that has three buildings already here which will be re-purposed," Trott said.

Currently there is only one other charter school in the county, but Sussex Montessori hopes to provide enhanced learning opportunities to all students, specifically making learning available to those in rural, low-income communities.

Trott says in total, this is a 10 million dollar project, and it is funded through both state and private funding. According to Trott, students will also be in mixed-aged classrooms.

"So you have kindergarteners and first graders in the same classroom, you have the older teaching the young, but it's not always that way. Sometimes you have the younger teaching the old," she said.

"It's a beautiful dynamic that really fosters learning."

In the first year, fall of 2020, Sussex Montessori will serve around 260 students, at full capacity, they will see about 455.

The school sits on 8.5 acres, and will start with about ten classrooms starting off.
