Cool Things to do Aug 3 & 4

Updated:

SUSSEX COUNTY, Del.- From art shows to car shows there are plenty of activities across Sussex County, Del. this weekend.

The 11th Annual Run for the Paws 5k is racing into Dewey Beach Saturday morning. This year, the race benefits the Brandywine Valley SPCA.

"[The proceeds] will be used towards the care and placement of homeless shelter pets as well as victims of cruelty and neglect," says BVSPCA Community Engagement Coordinator. "[Funds] also will be put towards our low cost veterinary clinic and other community programs such as our safety net programs."

Also Saturday morning is the 9th Annual CHEER Car, Truck and Bike Show. Located at the CHEER Center lot on Sand Hill Road, vintage cars and neat vehicles are on display. The event kicks off at 10 a.m. and is free to the public, though vehicle registration fees benefit CHEER's capital campaign to build a new kitchen. But the event also includes a delicious addition to all the cool cars.

"The people here in Georgetown they love to come out to the car show," says CHEER Marketing Director Anthony DelFranco. "Not only do we have our car show but we have our champagne brunch which makes us very unique."

Also on Saturday is the 6th Annual Recycled Cardboard Boat Regatta. Children, families, and businesses create boats entirely out of cardboard and tape. According to the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, the event offers participants fun opportunities to connect with Delaware’s waterways and provides important information on water quality that can help in protecting aquatic resources.

Marketing Specialist Phil Miller says the regatta also includes lighthearted fun.

"We give special awards for pride of the fleet, team spirit and most whimsical boat," he tells WRDE. "We also give trophies for the fastest time around the course in all four categories and we give a special award at the end called the 'Titanic Award' which is for the most dramatic sinking."
Miller clarifies that all the boats are removed from the water before they sink.

For something a little calmer but just as community centered there is the Rehoboth Art League's 46th Annual Outdoor Fine Art & Fine Craft Show. Over 125 artists are on hand from Aug 3-4 and Aug 10-11 at the league's Henlopen Acres campus.

"We showcase paintings, oil pastel, watercolors, we have woodworking, fine ceramics, jewelry, mixed media," says Exhibitions Director Nicholas Serratore. "So it's quite a variety and it draws a lot of people to it."
