Berlin Celebrates the 20th Anniversary of Runaway Bride

Posted: Updated:

BERLIN, Md. - The town of Berlin is celebrating a very special anniversary: 20 years since the release of the movie, Runaway Bride

The town kicked off Runaway Bride month. It'll host a number of activities throughout August to celebrate the iconic movie that was filmed in Berlin.

Visitors can play trivia for a chance to win a stay at the historic Atlantic Hotel or take a selfie with the stars.

"I thought, you know what, let's do it up for August," Ivy Wells, the economic and community development director said. "Our arts and entertainment committee is showing the movie Saturday night Aug. 24. They're doing a Runaway Bride costume contest. The hotel is having a luau dinner special, just like for the movie. We decorated the town as if you're coming for a wedding."

The film, Wells said, only gets better with age.

"I think the love for this movie will last for centuries to come," Wells said.

The movie plays on repeat at the Berlin Welcome Center, alongside newspaper clippings, cardboard cutouts, and pictures. It's a piece of Berlin's history that drives people to town.

"I always have several customers, especially in the summertime, they want to see where the movie was filmed. They want to see Richard Gere's room that he stayed in," said LuAnne Giorgione with the Atlantic Hotel. "And people, you know, they love movies and to be part of that or just know where it was filmed... they just really eat it up."

As for the question everyone is wondering: will Julia Roberts and Richard Gere be in town for the events? Wells said they tried, but the cardboard cutouts will have to do.
