SBY Airport to Gain Water Supply From Wor-Wic Community College Tower

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md. - Wicomico County will be taking on a big project to run a clean water supply from Wor-Wic Community College to the Salisbury-Ocean City Wicomico Regional Airport.

Assistant Director of Administration Weston Young says there has never been potable water at the airport.

"The water is not safe to drink at the moment. If you go in the airport terminal, you'll see they have water bottles there for consumption," Young said.

But now with a state grant to cover most of the $4 million project, the stars aligned to run six miles of water main to the terminal.

Those working and traveling in and around the airport, including at Piedmont Airlines Headquarters, FedEx and the Humane Society will now have tap water to drink from.  The new system will also help to pressurize water to give a better fire suppression for planes.

Young says he hopes the project will also help to promote economic development for the business complex behind the airport.

"It'll help us build larger hangars which is critical for commercial jets," Young said. "Drone manufacturers have been reaching out to us and there's sewer pipes already out there, by adding water they pretty much have all the municipal amenities they need to build."

Director of Public Works Dallas Baker says that once construction begins, it should take about a year to run the water pipes underground from Walston Switch Rd., underneath Mt. Hermon Rd. and out to the airport.

Young added that the project is delayed until a county attorney can be hired.  The county executive cannot sign off on contracts and bids until represented by legal counsel.

The county attorney, Paul Wilber, was voted out by the council effective July 31.
