DOVER, Del. --- Delaware drivers licenses could soon allow for users to list a gender neutral option, something states like Maryland and Pennsylvania are already moving toward.
C.R. McLeod said the state is researching whether a gender neutral option like an "X" would allow Delaware's licenses to remain compliant with the federal "Real ID Act."
"Ultimately if there's a way for Delaware to do this, we will," he said.
Federal requirements for state drivers licenses require a gender to be listed on the identification card.
However, many LGBT and equal rights advocacy groups have said adding a non-binary option to drivers licenses would allow for better inclusion of people who do not identify as male or female.
