Dover Post Office Close to Move Into Old Chesapeake Utility Space

DOVER, Del. - The U.S. Postal Service appears to have chosen Chesapeake Utilities former office in the city as its new home.

Charlie Rodriguez, a commercial realtor with R&R realty involved with selling the property on Queen Street, said on Friday an initial agreement had been struck between USPS and Chesapeake Utilities.

"There is a fully executed agreement of sale. The post office is in there doing some studies," he said.

The move would end the postal service's tenure at its current building on Loockerman Plaza, where it sits in a building constructed in 1964.

The city owns the land where the post office and is not renewing the lease, which is set to expire in 2020.

A USPS spokesman on Friday would not confirm the agency's intention to buy the Chesapeake Utilities property, saying it was his understanding that USPS was still conducting its due diligence and keeping its options open. The property has been on the shortlist of locations being considered for the new post office, according to USPS officials.

However, the number of options for the property recently dwindled because one of the locations considered for the new post office --- the former Value City property off Bay Road --- was being partially re-developed into a dollar store.

That left the Capital Station shopping center as the only other publicly-announced option by USPS, one that would only see postal service's retail options located there.

For regular post office customers like John Mitchell of Dover, a move to somewhere with a much larger parking lot was a must.

"It's a little tight and sometimes it's just confusing because when you're backing out, someone is backing in," he said.

Mayor Robin Christiansen said the decision is a good one because it keeps the post office downtown. He said the city would work with USPS to extend the lease if needed so that the move to the new location could work smoothly.

"I believe it's imperative to have a capital city with a post office that is able to service all of its citizens the businesses, the city offices, and the downtown area," he said.
