Seaford Family Dollar Reopens

Posted: Updated:

SEAFORD, DE-Last August an arson fire caused nearly 3 million dollars worth of damage to the Seaford Family Dollar.

According to Seaford Fire Chief Jack Wilson, about 150 firefighters from a dozen Maryland and Delaware fire departments responded.

The fire caused extensive fire and smoke damage, but the Family Dollar recently celebrated its grand re-opening, and many customers like Lynette Snowden said she's relieved.

"I'm excited because it's needed in the neighborhood and you have a lot of people that are limited with incomes and having a Family Dollar that's within people's budget, you know is a good thing," she said.

Others said since the store closed, they've had to travel farter for other affordable food options.

"We had to go over the bridge or down to Blades to the dollar stores down there or out on the highway," Novella Wilmer, also of Seaford said.

Randall Handy, the site's property manager says Family Dollar leases the space, and has even expanded the property since the fire, making for more space for products and groceries.

"They added 1300 square feet, it was originally 7,000 square feet," Handy said.

The recently restored building is an addition to the city's push to revitalize the area, hopefully attracting future businesses and people in the near future.
