Cool Things To Do August 10th & 11th

Posted: Updated:

SUSSEX COUNTY, Del. - August 10th and 11th is a weekend that brings several long-time traditions and plenty of cool things to do to the coast.

Just like every Saturday, the Historic Lewes Farmers Market will be held in George H.P. Smith Park, except this week one crop will be celebrated in honor of National Farmers Market Week.

It's the middle of tomato season and the start of the annual Tomato Festival. Farmers will be stationed with the juiciest ones they have to offer beginning at 8 a.m. The event is in its 13th year and that's the number of local farmers who will bring tomatoes and the number of local chefs who will be preparing them.

"They'll be preparing bite-size absolutely delicious tomato tastings," says Historic Lewes Farmers Market Vice President Nancy Staisy. "You'll be able to buy the tomato that they use in the recipe from the farmer that's positioned right next to them."

The farmers and chefs are in Lewes until noon, but artists of fine arts and fine crafts will be in Rehoboth until 5 p.m. on Saturday and 4 p.m. on Sunday. The Rehoboth Art League will host the 2nd weekend of its 46th Annual Outdoor Fine Arts and Fine Crafts Show on its 3.5 acre campus in Henlopen Acres.

Meanwhile in Dewey, the customers can bring their skills to the table at the Starboard. Starting at 2 p.m., children and adults can sign up for the 11th Annual Big Wheel Races that begin at 3 p.m.

Manager Megan Laird says that of course there will be big wheel races, but there will also be obstacle courses and a new event, the beach house race. "You can have four members of your beach house race together and you win $500 here to the Starboard," she says.

Proceeds from this day of fun and games will go to the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition

Then back to Lewes, more hands-on entertainment benefits a cause. Exotic animals from Barn Hill Preserve do meet and greets at the Crooked Hammock on Saturday's.

Head Brewer Jon Schorah loves seeing the kangaroos, sloths, and others that come each week. "The families that come here, they have a really cool opportunity to take pictures and learn about the animals," he says. "Their society gets to raise awareness for what they do in helping these animals."

The kids and their families can keep coming back to this recurring event that runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday's all summer long.

Another kid friendly event that recurs every weekend is story time at the Historic Lewes Farmers Market. In honor of the Tomato Festival, this week's book will be I will Never Not Ever Eat a Tomato by Lauren Child.

Each beach town will have a variety of cool things for both children and adults to do.
