Delaware Schools to be Able to Offer DART Passes to Students

Posted: Updated:

DOVER, Del. - More students in Delaware could soon be riding the DART bus, rather than a school bus, to get to school.

A new law allows both district and charter schools to purchase annual bus passes from the Delaware Transit Corporation for use by students in grades 6 through 12.

Many schools already offer DART passes for some students, including those who experience homelessness. The new law allows all students to use the passes and gives districts the ability to use a portion of their annual transportation funding for that purpose.

Senate Bill 166 also codified an existing practice that allows charter schools to join with each other or public school districts when it comes to bidding out bus routes to local contractors and permits charter schools to enter into multi-year contracts with those private bus companies.
