Fenwick Pedestrian Safety Plan Moves Closer To Reality

Posted: Updated:
FENWICK ISLAND, Del - The Pedestrian Safety Committee of Fenwick Island revealed on Monday that it hoped to finalize the bid by a contractor for the town's sidewalk by the end of November.

In July, Fenwick received a $250,000 state bond for the project. It is half of what they were expecting, but for those pushing the project think the funds will be beneficial.

"By the time the bond bill was passed the amount was cut," Councilwoman Vicki Carmean explained. "we are just happy and grateful for the money the state has provided."

The sidewalk will likely take from some of the parking spaces in front of the businesses along the Coastal Highway. "Parking is hard in this area and we have people drive here," the manager of Crepes and Crazes Davina Ell said. "So it will definitely impact our business."

Ell added that she does think the sidewalks will help with the safety of pedestrians walking along Delaware Route 1.

The town council plans expects construction to begin shortly after they have a contractor in place.
