Delaware State Police Give Road Safety Tips for Bicyclists and Motorcyclists

Posted: Updated:

DOVER, Del.- Delaware State Police are providing motorcyclists and bicyclists with some safety tips for riding in the First State.

Troopers on Tuesday in a release advised bicyclists to obey the rules of the road and never ride against the flow of traffic.

On Coastal Highway in the Lewes and Rehoboth beach areas, bicycles can ride on the sidewalks and must yield to pedestrians. In certain areas, bikes are not allowed on the sidewalk.

Troopers explain that motorcyclists can prevent crashes and injuries by doing the following: Maintaining safe speeds, keeping headlights and taillights on in the dark and the rain, staying 3 to 4 seconds behind vehicles they want to pass, using turn signals, checking for oncoming cars before passing, and wearing helmets and proper clothing.

Police advise motorists to be extra cautious on weekends when more bicyclists and motorists are on the road. They also say to check the vehicle's mirrors before changing lanes if a bicycle or motorcycle is close by.
